What is your design process and how is the collection put together?
Our entire design and printing process is manual. We draw inspiration from things around us. We design on paper, print by hand and only create small quantities of every item. The prints and patterns are all our original designs (unless otherwise specified).
The block printing process: All the clothing items and tote bags at Cut the Posh are printed by hand, with carved wooden blocks in Pakistan, using a method known as hand or wood block printing - an age old printing method, that has been in existence for more than three centuries.
- Step 1: Our designs are carved by hand into wooden blocks from cross-sections of ’teak' wood by master carvers in interior villages of Punjab. This skill has been passed from generation to generation, and now with the onset of ‘fast fashion’ and mechanization of almost everything, it is a precious skill that we aim to preserve and sustain.
- Step 2: To print, the fabric is stretched and pinned to long printing tables in our home based studio, after which our block printer prepares the desired pigments to get the dye ready, dips the carved wooden block in the dye tray, and carefully presses the block on the fabric with a hard pounding of the fist. He repeats this process, aligning the blocks perfectly by eye, without the aid of any tools or machine, relying simply on his years of experience.
- Step 3: Once the pattern has been completed, we inspect it before we send it to our tailoring workshop and once stitched, it is ready to be shipped to San Francisco, California, where it is assembled, ready to be packaged and shipped off to the new owner of an artisan created, truly unique item.
Jewelry and tassels: For our jewelry, tassels and other similar items, we seek out and employ skilled craftswomen in small villages of interior Sindh, who are thrilled to get an opportunity to demonstrate their artisanal abilities (passed on through generations), whilst working from the safety of their own homes, and having the opportunity to improve their lives. We collaborate with them to combine their hand coiling, knotting and embroidery skills with a contemporary aesthetic.
Supporting the Slow Fashion movement: We strive to, (to whatever extent possible), follow (slow) processes which have some social benefit. Using hand printing, tailoring and crafting methods, we also minimize our carbon footprint.
How long does it take to create a block?
The process of carving the wooden stamp can take 7 to 10 days, depending on the size and complexity of the design. Also, since each color needs its own block, for a single motif, we normally use up to three colors, and hence will need 3 carved blocks to complete each motif (one for the design outline, and two ‘filler’ blocks for each color within).
As you can tell, it really is a labor of love and effort.
How long does it take to block print a single piece?
We aren’t using robots or machines, so there is no fixed time or number, as it really depends on the size and intricacy of the pattern we are trying to create. Sometimes it might be just the one piece that the block printer completes in a day, or 3 or more because they are smaller pieces.
And what takes one block printer 5 hours to complete, might take another 4 or even 6. Such is the beauty of hand made items, it bears the signature of the artisan who helps creates it, rendering it truly one of a kind.
Do you ever outsource your designs?
Majority of our collection is designed and made in-house. However on occasion, if we fall in love with some new designers work, we may commission them to create pieces for us.
For some of our statement necklaces, we collaborated with a jewelry designer, Sheeba, as she too works with rural artisans.
How do we care for the clothing items?
Please hand wash or dry clean only. Since we use various pigments to print our pieces, sometimes the color may ‘bleed’ in the first couple of washes which is fairly common.

Do you offer gift wrapping?
We do not gift wrap but we do wrap up your purchase in a brown paper package tied up with string (and we think that's kinda better!). If you're sending someone a gift, you can leave a note for the recipient in the "Order Notes" box when you check out. We'll handwrite the message on a note card. Don’t worry, we’ll try to ‘pretty up’ the packaging a bit with strings or ribbons, so they’re delighted with it!
Are you open to collaborating or stocking at retail?
If there’s a ‘fit, absolutely! Please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org or send us a message on 1-415-966-6459. Tell us about your idea, your shop, your customers, and other brands you carry and we will take it from there!
Do you do custom projects?
We love collaborations and getting creative - drop us a note on email@example.com and if it sounds like fun and is doable, let's move forward with it!
Will my item look exactly like the one I saw online?
Because of the nature of our hand block printing process, color and pattern variations are to be expected and celebrated. This is why we love our product, and hope you will too. No two textile pieces are exactly alike, as each has been lovingly and carefully made from start to finish by an entire community of artisans.
What if I want to return or exchange something?
Easy. We want to make sure you're completely happy with your purchase. If for any reason you're not, please let us know immediately and we'll let you know where to return the product to. We ask you to keep all tags on and that there is no damage to the clothing. If returned within 7-10 days you can expect a full refund back to the payment method.
